Our Curriculum
Modern Foreign Languages
Intent:

The intent of the MFL curriculum is:
-
To equip learners with the tools and knowledge they need to become confident language learners, accepting of and interested in other cultures, enabling them to succeed in an increasingly multicultural and international world.
-
To foster students’ interest and curiosity in languages and learning in general

Implementation:

In MFL at HCCS we strive to foster students’ interest and curiosity in languages and learning in general. Students are exposed to new cultures and differences to develop their tolerance, respect and curiosity for our global community, alongside learning the tools needed to study a foreign language. Students have a greater awareness of the positive impact of different viewpoints and experiences. They are able to communicate with confidence in other languages and have a greater understanding of how their own language and other languages work.

MFL lessons are structured around the development of the key skills of:
-
listening
-
speaking
-
reading
-
writing
These skills feature across every topic and are developed through the teaching of:
-
phonics
-
vocabulary
-
grammar
In KS3 students have 6 lessons per fortnight as follows:
In Year 7 students have 6 lessons of Spanish a fortnight.
In Years 8 and 9 students study two languages, with three lessons of each language a fortnight.
In KS4 students have 5 lessons per fortnight for each language that they choose to study.
At KS5 students have up to 8 hours of lesson time along with directed study periods.

Impact
Impact of the curriculum is measured through rigorous assessments throughout the year, as detailed below. Following each formal assessment, at least one lesson will be dedicated to feedback and review to ensure students have meaningful time to reflect on their progress and consolidate their learning.
