Art & Design
Overview
Art describes a diverse range of cultural activity centered around works utilising creative or imaginative talents, which are expected to evoke a worthwhile experience, generally through an expression of emotional power, conceptual ideas, beauty, and/or technical proficiency. The Art & Design curriculum at HCCS is designed to give all students the opportunity to explore and develop key skills in art & design as well as the spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspects of education. We aim to teach our students about visual literacy and appreciation of art disciplines from across a range of cultures and time. We also encourage our students to develop a chronological framework of learning in each project that will enable them to make sense of, and connect, the new knowledge they acquire. This allows them to understand the process of art, to see how they arrived at an outcome and help them to make sense of the process.

What is the 'big picture' in Art?

The ‘big picture’ outlines how the Big Ideas and areas of knowledge of each subject fit together:
At HCCS students from years 7 to 13 are introduced to the Big Ideas that underpin the study of art as well as aspects of art history through to the present day:

-
Conceptual understanding, interpretation and appreciation
-
Visual literacy and analysis

Creativity and imagination
-
Technical proficiency

-
Conceptual understanding: That our students build declarative knowledge (knowing that), in particular, of key concepts such as:
-
Art movement
-

-
Culture
-
Art mediums

2. Procedural understanding: that our students build procedural knowledge (knowing how to):
-
apply art historical knowledge
-
follow technical processes
-
write annotations

3. Disciplinary knowledge: that our students understand the ways that artists/craftspeople/designers work

4. Chronological knowledge: that our students can ‘place’ the artist movements/artists and cultures that they study into a meaningful framework.
